The Humboldt Speed Skating Club is the home of Canadian National Team, Olympic and World Cup skater William Dutton. The club is also home to several Canadian Age Class Champions and numerous Canadian medalists. Oh yeah, we claim the 'Spoon' Jeremy Wotherspoon too; he was born in the Humboldt Hospital.

Humboldt Club History published in History book
In 1989 Wendy Toye took up the torch for speed skating in Humboldt and laid the foundations for one of the most successful clubs in the province. Toye and a group of volunteer parents organized the Club and served as founders, coaches and every other position required of a new club. They approached the City schools and recreation department started operations that year with skates donated by the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club.
The club grew from a few families to include as many as 40 skaters in the learn to skate program. Early families both volunteers and skaters included Stumburgs, Toyes, and Stolzs. Other skating families included the Spences, Peters, and Eatons.
By the mid-nineties Carol and Hugh Jenkins were providing leadership for the club and their three sons were skating. In 1995-96 another soon to be well known skating family joined the club and Addison and Ebony Thiel hit the ice.
In 2000 Ebony and Addison Thiel brought home the club's first 4 National medals and Ebony was the clubs first national champion in Long Track. Addison was the first of many runners-up and won 2 medals. Along the way Ebony set both Provincial and National records some of which still stand six years later. Sadly Ebony broke her leg twice in short track and the club lost one of it's best competitors to injury. Ebony retired with six national medals including winning 2 more in 2002 when she finished 3rd in Canada.
Addison also set a number of Provincial and Canadian records. In 2002 he won 2 gold the first day but finished second after being knocked off his feat in the next two races by team mates of the eventual winner. In 2004 he finished 2nd overall with 1 gold and 1 bronze. He also represented the province at the 2002 Canada Winter games. Addison retired in 2006 with many provincial titles, two national runner-up finishes and 5 national medals.
In 1999 another speed skating family hit the ice, the Burner family - Nathan, Ryan, Terran Bernhard. Lloyd and Susan Bernhard both serve on the executive.
Nathan won his 2 first national medals in 2001 in Regina. In 2004 he picked up a second National medal. In 2005 he cleaned up winning 2 gold and a bronze.
Little brother Ryan became the club's second National Champion winning 3 gold and a silver.
In 2006 Nathan became the club's third national champion winning 3 gold and a bronze. He also became the club's first North American Champion winning three gold and a Silver at Salt Lake city.
Willie Dutton joined the club in 2002. He brought home 2 national medals that year. In 2004 he won another medal at Nationals. In 2006 he won three medals and finished second overall at Canadians. He also finished second in the North American Championship at Salt Lake City.
Through the years the club has been fortunate that many volunteers have stepped forward to provide the means for skaters to compete recreationally, at club events, provincially, Nationally and Internationally. All of this generations skaters have blossomed under the 'winning-est' coach in the province, Larry Thiel. His patience, knowledge and willingness to share are the foundation of the club's Provincial and National Championships. Successor coach Craig Dutton has been fortunate to work with Larry and to continue the winning tradition of the Humboldt speed skating Club.
In 2006 another strong volunteer stepped forward, Rachel Krueger re-introduced the school based speed skating program with the help of teachers from St. Dominic. The program and Cindy Klassen's astounding success in the 2006 Olympics and World Championships have again raised the profile of speed skating in Humboldt.
Maybe one of Humboldt's finest will make the final step to the Olympic podium in the future.

Fire on Ice ...Burner wins Province Again
(Prince Albert) Ryan Bernhard racked up another provincial Championship for the Humboldt Speed Skating Club at this weekend's Short Track Championships held in Prince Albert. Four Humboldt Club Speed Skaters traveled to Prince Albert March 4th and 5th to compete in the Championships.
Ryan “Burner 2” Bernhard, a first year juvenile, won 3 out of 4 races in his age class. He was on track for a four gold performance but was disqualified for impeding in one race. Coach Craig Dutton said "Ryan skates tough but honest. He's the best and sometimes his opponents get the sympathy call because Ryan's kicking their butts. Ryan skates clean."
Ryan was awarded the overall gold medal and provincial title. "Ryan competes at a national level and he's been coached to keep his track and make someone take it away if they can. Humboldt skaters win because they are tough competitors. Sometimes you get disqualified...bottom line he is the Champion again." Dutton added. He also won the crowd’s respect during the relay races when he jumped over a fallen skater narrowly avoiding a serious injury to the fallen skater.
Terran "Torch" Bernhard, a Midget Boy, placed a respectable 6th in his division. Terran kept spectators on the edge of their seats with some gutsy and tough outside passes. Bernhard pulled what might have been the upset of the meet when he burned the leader of his division and pre-race favourite in a heat and qualified for the medal final. The Torch has some solid wins this season and is looking good for next year.
Nigel "Krazy Legs" Krueger, a first year Pee Wee skater set four smoking hot personal bests, one in each distance. Sneaking past a number second year skaters Krazy Legs placed a very solid 5th place. Krueger put the dagger in the opposition and served notice that he would be a contender for the Championship next year by winning his final and longest race of the weekend.
Jacob Krueger, a first year speed skater raced in the cradle division of short track for the first time. maybe the smallest and youngest skater of the competition "Jake the Snake" was as quick a rattler. He was a crowd favourite and finished in second place.
Teammates Nathan Bernhard and William Dutton did not compete. Dutton suffered a broken collar bone in practice and Nathan had prior commitments pounding the skins with his band Groundwire.

Humboldt Club Wins More Medals than Some Provinces
(Dawson Creek) Humboldt Speed Skaters flew under the radar this weekend at the Canadian Age Class Championships in Dawson Creek B.C. while the world watched the opening ceremonies and first day of the 2006 Olympic games. Dawson Creek is mile zero of the Alaskan highway. Is it also mile zero on the road to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics?
While the country was watching Clara Hughe’s disappointment and Cindy Klassen’s Bronze in Torino this weekend Humboldt skaters Nathan Bernhard and William Dutton just kept winning. When the final tally was in Humboldt had 7 medals: 3 Gold, Silver and 2 Bronze more than several provinces at the 2006 Championship.
Bernhard won his second Championship in two weeks taking 2 Gold and two Silver. By the end of the second day it was clear that only an injury to Bernhard would give anyone else a shot at the overall medal. “Nathan is ready for the big time” said Humboldt coach Craig Dutton. “He dominates his age class and now he’s ready to take on the big boys at the Canada Winter Games next year” he added.
Willie Dutton brought home three Canadian Championship medals, a Gold and two Bronze. Dutton finished a close second in the overall in his age class. The race of weekend featured Dutton, three Quebecers and two B.C. skaters in the junior men’s 1500. Dutton won Gold with what Saskatchewan Provincial coach John Monroe called “the pass of the year. Monroe said "Willie is the only skater in the country who could have won that race with that move."
Three skaters from la Belle Province blocked the western lads for the first 1200 meters. As they hit the final corner at 50 km/hour the Quebecers were in front while Dutton brought up the rear. When the pack broke down the final straight away Dutton was in the lead and the crowd were shaking their heads.
Younger brother and 2005 Midget Canadian Champion Ryan Bernhard was shut out as a first year Juvenile. Ryan suffered equipment problems when his skate blade broke away from the boot after the second race Saturday. A Canadian Tire fiber glass repair kit and a couple hourts billable time had him back in the hunt the next morning in the medal final of the 1500. He finished a very respectable fourth. Ryan will be among the favourites to win next year.
Saskatchewan under twenty skaters picked up a total of 10 medals at the Championship.

Humboldt Golden at Canadian Championships
(Dawson Creek B.C.) Nathan "Burner" Bernhard and Willie "Willdog" Dutton have are both in the hunt for the Canadian Championship in their age class at the Long Track Age Class Championship in Dawson Creek B.C. Dutton has a Gold and a sixth after suffering equipment problems in the first medal final of the day. He sits second but within striking distance of the leader heading into day two.
In what many are calling the race of the day Dutton was sixth and dead last going into the final corner of the 1500 but pulled a miracle pass on the inside to claim Gold at the line. Provincial coach John Monroe called it "the pass of year." The win kept Dutton's hopes of a championship alive.
Burner Bernhard, the reigning North American Champion, continues to dominate his age group. Bernhard has a Silver and a Gold in the first two distances. He sits first in his age class with two races remaining.
Saskatoon skater Haley Spencer narrowly missed the Bronze in her first race finishing fourth. She was in the hunt for gold in the second but was knocked down by a Alberta skater who was disqualified.
The Saskatchewan team picked up six medals in the first day of competition.

Burner Bernhard North American Champ
(Salt Lake City) From his first race of the meet there was never any doubt that Nathan Bernhard would be the North American Intermediate Champion of 2006. Burner smoked the competition winning all four distances and the overall championship to finish the weekend with a perfect record.
Bernhard, a Humboldt Speed Skating member, took the weekend off drumming for the punk rock band Groundwire to short circuit his opponents plans of picking up gold. Humboldt coach Craig Dutton said "Nathan beat them like a snare drum. He'll carry a lot of momentum into the Canadian Championships in Dawson Creek in two weeks."
Bernhard set a North American record in the 1000 meter and several Saskatchewan records over the weekend.

Spencer, in a photo finish, took Silver in the 1500 and a Bronze in the 1000. Spencer is second among Junior Women.
Dutton missed the primary in the 1500 when the 2nd place skater recieved a warning for impeding Dutton but the Humboldt Junior was not advanced. Dutton won the secondary heat of the 1500 handily. He came back with a solid Silver medal win in the 1000 and presently sits fourth.
Racing continues Sunday and all three skaters will skate a 500 and a 3000. The team is considered very strong in both of these distances.

Saskatoon Airport Violates Disabled Parking
This is the situation disabled persons and caregivers ran into on Monday January 16 at the Saskatoon airport. Snow clearing personnel had filled the disabled parking spots with snow cleared from other areas of the parking lot. Perhaps they felt free to do this because no one was getting into a wheelchair when the lot was being plowed, they did not say.
The vehicle with the snow piled up against the doors presumably belongs to a disabled person who will be unable to get in their car when they return. Not to mention the fact that new comers will damned well have find some other place to park.
After I raised this with management telling them if they would give me a letter indicating that they would stop piling snow in the disabled parking spots I would not send the pictures I had taken to the newspaper. They declined to give me such a letter. Instead, I was escorted to a corner office with a great view of the runways. I was told they'd "like to help me" but that what I didn't understand or appreciate was that the runways were a priority. I replied that I had trained as pilot and understood that the runways must be cleared but that the issue was; Why pile your snow in the disabled parking spots? Clearly they had time to scrape the snow up from other places in the parking lot and place it in the disabled spots. It was a conscious decision to make the disabled parking unavailable.
The individual (I believe it was the CEO but I might be mistaken) then gave a myriad of reasons they could not clean it up; we have 5 miles of runways to clear, no one was parked there, we'll do it when we have time. I was told several times that I was being unreasonable.
I advised them I was an advocate on behalf of my daughter and other disabled persons and there was no acceptable excuse for their practice. I further advised the Airport Authority (in the executive offices overlooking the luggage area) I was going to send the pictures to the Star Phoenix and members of their board. To their credit, however reluctant they were, they sent a Bobcat to clean out the snow.
When the members of the snow removal team arrived I decided to take a picture of the cleanup. Actually I was quite impressed with the quick action even though they had to be coerced into taking it. One of the crew protested my taking a picture and told me to stop. I responded this was not the old Soviet Union and last time I checked I was free to take a picture if I wanted. He then said "yeah, you're the whiner who was bitching about the handicapped parking." I responded that someone needed to keep an eye on assholes who fill disabled parking spots with snow piles and took another picture.
Gentlemen of the Saskatoon Airport Authority...this is me whining.

Saskatchewan Skaters Alberta Open Champions
(Red Deer) Nathan Bernhard and William Dutton of the Humboldt Speed Skating Club rolled into Red Deer as the favourites and skated off with the Gold medals winning their divisions in the Alberta Open Long Track Championships Saturday and Sunday. A third Humboldt skater, Ryan Bernhard was the silver medallist as a first year Juvenile.
Nathan Bernhard won the Intermediate division setting both Saskatchewan and Alberta Provincial Records. Dutton won the Junior division with a perfect weekend winning all four distances and setting Provincial and Canadian record in the 3000 meter race. “It is great to win in Alberta” they said. “Now we want to beat the Americans at the North American Championships” Bernhard added.
Provincial Coach John Monroe said, “the Humboldt boys have to be among the favourites at the North American Championships next weekend in Salt Lake City.” Dutton and Bernhard are representing Saskatchewan at the Championship Jan 27-29.
Nathan Bernhard and Dutton are both members of Speed Skate Canada’s Saskatchewan Regional Training Center team. They are Provincial Team members and among the favourites to represent Saskatchewan in the 2007 Canada Winter Games.
Their home town speed skating club was down to five skaters this fall and they don’t have an oval to train on, but the Humboldt skaters just keep winning. Humboldt Team members hold and have held numerous Provincial and Canadian records and Championships over the past decade.

Re: Humboldt Speed Skater Breaks Canadian Record Again
(Red Deer) Humboldt Speed Skater William Dutton set a new Canadian Record at the Alberta Open Long Track Championship in Red Deer Sunday. Dutton, a Humboldt Club member, and a Speed Skating Canada’s Regional Training Center athlete broke the existing 3000 meter record.
In a statistical anaomoly, only three skaters have held the record in the three years it has been an official distance and all three are Humboldt Skaters. Addison Thiel set the original record for the first time in 2004 with a 4:40.87. Nathan Bernhard broke it in 2005 with a time of 4:37.86. Dutton skated a new record in under 4:30.66 in 2006.
