Saskatchewan Skaters Alberta Open Champions

(Red Deer) Nathan Bernhard and William Dutton of the Humboldt Speed Skating Club rolled into Red Deer as the favourites and skated off with the Gold medals winning their divisions in the Alberta Open Long Track Championships Saturday and Sunday. A third Humboldt skater, Ryan Bernhard was the silver medallist as a first year Juvenile.

Nathan Bernhard won the Intermediate division setting both Saskatchewan and Alberta Provincial Records. Dutton won the Junior division with a perfect weekend winning all four distances and setting Provincial and Canadian record in the 3000 meter race. “It is great to win in Alberta” they said. “Now we want to beat the Americans at the North American Championships” Bernhard added.

Provincial Coach John Monroe said, “the Humboldt boys have to be among the favourites at the North American Championships next weekend in Salt Lake City.” Dutton and Bernhard are representing Saskatchewan at the Championship Jan 27-29.

Nathan Bernhard and Dutton are both members of Speed Skate Canada’s Saskatchewan Regional Training Center team. They are Provincial Team members and among the favourites to represent Saskatchewan in the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

Their home town speed skating club was down to five skaters this fall and they don’t have an oval to train on, but the Humboldt skaters just keep winning. Humboldt Team members hold and have held numerous Provincial and Canadian records and Championships over the past decade.
